The second General Assembly of the Iranian Students Association for Democracy opened its proceedings at 09:00 on 12 October 2024. One hundred and twelve delegates — representing eleven chapters from Berlin to Melbourne — took their seats in the Open Hall of the ICC Mitte. The agenda had been circulated three weeks in advance. The session would close with a binding vote on three resolutions and the formal ratification of the association's expanded steering committee.
The morning session was given over to chapter reports. Each delegation presented a ten-minute account of activities since the founding assembly in March: membership numbers, local outreach campaigns, relationships with academic institutions, and any legal or logistical obstacles encountered. The reports were recorded in full and will be published in the association's internal archive.
The afternoon turned to policy. Three resolutions were put to the floor. The first — endorsing a common position on diaspora political engagement ahead of European parliamentary hearings in 2025 — passed with 94 votes in favour, 8 opposed, and 10 abstentions. The second, establishing a permanent documentation committee, passed unanimously. The third, relating to the structure of dues and chapter funding, was deferred to a working group with a mandate to report before 31 January 2025.
02 · The steering committeeThe assembly ratified the expanded steering committee, bringing its composition to nine members drawn from seven countries. The secretariat will remain based in Berlin. Two new positions — a documentation coordinator and an external relations officer — were filled by election. The results of that election will be communicated to all chapter leads within five working days of the assembly.
"We do not convene to agree. We convene to make our disagreements legible — and then to vote."
The assembly closed at 18:30 with a reading of the minutes of all three votes and a brief address from the outgoing coordinator. The next general assembly is anticipated for spring 2025, location to be confirmed by the steering committee at its first session in November.
